Living in Turkey can be an enriching and diverse experience, as it combines elements of East and West, offering a rich history, culture and varied geography. Here are some important aspects if you are considering moving to Turkey:
1. Cost of Living
The cost of living in Turkey can vary considerably depending on the city where you live. Istanbul and Ankara tend to be more expensive, especially in terms of rent, while smaller cities or rural areas are more affordable.
Rent: In Istanbul, rents can be high, but in smaller cities costs are much more affordable.
Food: Fresh produce and local foods are often inexpensive, and farmers’ markets are an excellent option for buying fruits, vegetables and spices.
Transportation: Turkey has a good public transportation system in the larger cities, making it easy to get around without needing your own car.
2. Culture and Lifestyle
Turkey has a diverse culture that blends Middle Eastern traditions with European influences. Large cities such as Istanbul are modern and cosmopolitan, while rural areas tend to be more traditional.
Language: The official language is Turkish, and although in large cities some people speak English, especially in tourist areas, learning at least the basics of Turkish will be very useful.
Food: Turkish cuisine is varied and delicious. Kebab, meze (assorted snacks) and sweets such as baklava are popular. In addition, coffee and tea are fundamental in daily life.
Religion: Turkey is a majority Muslim country, and although it is secular by constitution, religious practices can influence daily life, especially during Ramadan.
3. Visa and Residence Permit
To live in Turkey, you will need a residence visa or a work permit if you plan to work there.
Visas: If you plan to stay longer than 90 days, you will need to apply for a residence permit. This usually requires you to prove that you have sufficient financial means to support yourself.
Work: If you wish to work, you will need a job offer in order to apply for a work permit, which is usually sponsored by the employer.
4. Health and Medical Insurance
Turkey has an accessible public and private health care system. As a resident, you can register with the social security system (SGK), which will give you access to public health care.
Health Insurance: If you are not working, you can take out private or public health insurance according to your needs.
5. Education
If you have children, Turkey offers both public and private schools. International schools are available in major cities such as Istanbul and Ankara, where classes are taught in English and other languages.
6. Climate
Turkey has a varied climate due to its geographical extension and topographical differences. The Aegean and Mediterranean coastal region has a Mediterranean climate, with mild winters and warm summers. The interior of the country, such as Ankara, has a more continental climate, with hot summers and cold winters.
7. People and Society
Turks are known for being hospitable and welcoming, especially to foreigners. Personal relationships and family are fundamental to Turkish culture. It is also important to be aware of social norms, such as greeting properly and showing respect for local customs.
