The city of Rosario is located in central-eastern Argentina, in the province of Santa Fe. It is the third most populated city in Argentina after Buenos Aires and Córdoba, and is an important cultural, economic, educational, financial and entertainment center, forming part of the so-called Agricultural Triangle, together with the cities of Pergamino and Venado Tuerto.
It is located on the western bank of the Paraná River, on the Paraná – Paraguay Waterway. On this river there is a 140 ha port that handles both general and bulk cargoes.
Together with several localities in the area, it forms the metropolitan area of Greater Rosario, which is the third largest urban conglomerate in the country. The 2010 National Population Census established a population for the department of Rosario (composed of the city of Rosario and 23 other municipalities) of 1,193,697 people, according to data provided by the INDEC (National Institute of Statistics and Census). According to the same census, the municipality of Rosario had 948 312 inhabitants.2 Based on vegetative growth, it was estimated to have a population of 964 833 in 2014.4
The city is part of a region of great economic importance. Nearly 70% of the country’s grain production is exported through its port. It generates the second largest urban GDP in Argentina after Greater Buenos Aires.
An educational and cultural center, it also has important museums and libraries, and its tourist infrastructure includes architectural circuits, promenades, boulevards and parks.
The city of Rosario is known as the Cradle of the Argentine Flag, and its most famous building is the Monument to the Flag.
