Passport: Copy of valid passport (both of the owner of the belongings and family members, if applicable).
Visa or residence: Document that accredits your immigration status in Panama (resident visa, work visa, etc.).
Detailed inventory of goods: Detailed list of all items to be imported. This inventory must be in Spanish, valued in U.S. dollars, and signed.
Vehicle purchase invoice (if applicable): In case you are importing a car, you need the original invoice, vehicle title, and other related documents.
2. Procedures to follow:
Declaration of personal property: You will need to file with customs a declaration of the personal property you are importing. This is key for customs to determine if the goods qualify for tax exemption (for those who obtain residency in Panama).
Customs broker: It is advisable to hire a customs broker to manage the import process. This professional will help you prepare the documentation, make the inventory and carry out the customs procedures on your behalf.
Moving Certification: In order for your personal belongings to be considered as part of a move, you must certify that the goods are for personal use and that they are not being imported for commercial purposes.
3. Tax exemption for residents:
If you move to Panama as a resident, you may benefit from exemption from customs duties on the importation of your personal goods, provided certain conditions are met:
Used goods: The items must be used and for personal use.
Reasonable quantity: It must not appear that you are bringing in merchandise to trade.
Moving time: Generally, you are allowed to bring in your belongings within a certain period of time after you receive your residence (usually within a period of up to six months).
4. Automobiles:
If you plan to import an automobile, specific requirements must be met and may be subject to tax depending on the value and age of the vehicle.
You may be required to obtain a certificate of no taxes owed in the country of origin.
5. Inspection of goods:
Once your belongings arrive in Panama, they will go through a customs inspection. During this process, the authorities will verify the inventory and check that everything declared corresponds to what is actually imported.
6. Time and costs:
Times may vary, but generally customs procedures can take between one week and one month, depending on the complexity of the process and the amount of goods to be imported.
