Living in the Netherlands
The Netherlands holds countless charms, making this small yet great European country one of the most attractive in the region, known for its tulips, windmills, and canals. It enjoys a solid economy, thanks to its financial policies, which are largely fueled by exports. The Dutch are open-minded people who hold a great admiration for Spain and warmly welcome immigrants who arrive in their country. At Mudanzas BCN, we cover this moving route to the Netherlands both exclusively and with shared transport.
The Netherlands
The Netherlands is located in northwestern Europe, bordered to the north and west by the North Sea, to the south by Belgium, and to the east by Germany. Its capital is Amsterdam, and unofficially, the country is often referred to metonymically by the name of its most important region, Holland, situated in the western part of the Netherlands.
Language
With a population of just over 17 million, the official language of the Netherlands is Dutch. In the province of Friesland, there are two official languages: Dutch and Frisian, the only officially recognized regional language.
Economy
About three-quarters of the population works in the tertiary sector, a quarter in the industrial sector, and only 4% of workers are employed in agriculture. Despite this figure, the Netherlands is a major exporter of agricultural and horticultural products.
Climate
The climate is quite humid due to frequent rainfall, both in summer and winter. Summers are warm, though temperatures rarely exceed 20°C, and it’s rare for them to reach 30°C. Winters, from December to February, are cold but not freezing, with average temperatures around 3°C. Minimum temperatures hover around zero, while maximums are around 6°C.
Workday
According to Dutch law, the maximum working time allowed is 9 hours per day and 45 hours per week. However, a person is only permitted to work 2,080 hours per year, which averages to 40 hours per week. The typical workweek runs from Monday to Friday, depending on the type of job.
Transportation
In the Netherlands, it’s very common to see most people getting around by bicycle. The country is highly committed to environmental sustainability, which is why there are approximately 35,000 kilometers of bike lanes.
