Customs formalities
1. Necessary documentation:
Passport: A copy of your valid passport.
Visa or residence permit: Document that proves your immigration status in Australia (work visa, residence, etc.).
Detailed inventory of goods: It is necessary to present an inventory in English of all the items you wish to import. It must be detailed, specifying the estimated value and condition of the goods (used or new).
Proof of residency: It is recommended to have proof that you are moving to Australia on a permanent or temporary basis (e.g. a visa or employment contract).
2. Duty-free goods:
Australia allows duty-free importation of used personal and household goods, provided certain requirements are met:
Personal Use: The goods must be for personal or household use and must not be imported for commercial purposes.
Used goods: The goods must have been used by the owner for at least 12 months prior to the move.
Residence: The owner of the belongings must be moving to Australia as a permanent, temporary or student resident, or have been outside Australia for an extended period (at least 12 months).
3. Restricted or prohibited items:
Australia has strict regulations for the importation of certain items. Some categories of goods require special permits, while others are prohibited altogether.
Restricted or prohibited items include:
Fresh food, plants and animal products: Australia has strict biosecurity laws, so you must declare any foodstuffs, plants or animal products you import. These may be subject to inspection.
Firearms, weapons and ammunition: Require special permits and are heavily regulated.
Hazardous or toxic materials.
Any prohibited items that are not declared may be confiscated, and you could face fines.
4. Customs and declaration process:
When your belongings arrive in Australia, you are required to submit a
customs declaration. This is done through form
B534 – Declaration for Unaccompanied Personal Effects. This form lists the imported goods, and you must indicate if any of the items require special permits or are subject to inspection.

6. Automobiles:
The importation of vehicles into Australia is strictly regulated. You must apply for a vehicle import permit before shipping the car. This includes cars, motorcycles, caravans and other types of vehicles.

8. Inspection and biosecurity:
Australia has very strict
biosecurity standards to protect its ecosystem. Any items that may pose a risk (such as timber, leather goods, animal products, etc.) will be inspected by the
Department of Agriculture, Water and Environment.
If a biosecurity risk is detected, the items may be fumigated, destroyed or returned to the country of origin at your expense.
